The newcomers from Jagjaguwar unveil in this first album a delicate and sunny pop. Midnight Sister - the project of the two creatives Juliana Giraffe and Ari Bazuulian - comes to us via the isolated landscapes of the San Francisco Valley - its colors, its diners, its madness and its dazzling lights. Longtime residents of the valley, the two members of Midnight Sister have always been inspired by the mythology surrounding their city and in particular by its paradoxical history, both tragic and enchanting. Saturn Over Sunset could almost be seen as the album adaptation of Rubert Altman’s film Short Cuts, where each song is the observation of the strange characters who live in this valley. Juliana is the daughter of a Los Angeles DJ and was raised on disco and David Buwie’s music. The lyrics and melodies she composes came to her while she was contemplating Sunset Boulevard through her small window. Her “back window,” as she calls it, allows her imagination to work and to create the lyrics that will accompany Ari’s compositions. The latter is already seasoned thanks to his work as an arranger of strange pop for artists such as Tubias Jessu Jr. and Alex Izenberg. This is the first time Giraffe has written and played, and it is also the first time Baluuzian has played pure pop. Saturn Over Sunset sketches the most curious corners of Hollywood.
