Lost river

Description

Lost River presents a sort of powerfully evocative 'post-ambient' sound with rich textures that is already among the most extraordinary 'out of category' recordings that ECM has recently specialized in. Drummer and percussionist Michele Rabbia and guitarist Eivind Aarset have performed many times in concert as a duo, and Rabbia has also collaborated with trombonist Gianlucca Petrella in various contexts, but this album is a first in trio. Largely relying on spontaneous improvisation and filled with a bloom of mysterious details, the soundscapes of Lost River continually reveal themselves in new forms. Rabbia's drums, enhanced with electronic effects, become light, creative, and delightfully propulsive. Aarset's fluid playing will surely enchant those who have succumbed to his leader project Dream Logic as well as his multiple inspired contributions to the albums of Nils Petter Molvær, Tigran Hamasyan, and Andy Sheppard. As for Petrella's role as the main instrumental voice, it will surprise those who only know him as a great jazz soloist alongside Enrico Rava and Giovanni Guidi.
