Pianist Michael Wollny forms an amazing trio for his new album: GhostsA few years ago, Michel Contat wrote in Télérama: "It's not to belittle Michael Wollny to place this young German pianist (born in 1978) in the prestigious lineage of Paul Bley, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, Esbjörn Svensson, Stefano Bollani: he cheerfully stands the comparison." On "Ghosts," Michael Wollny, accompanied by bassist Tim Lefebvre (bassist on David Bowie's "Blackstar") and drummer Eric Schaefer, explores the ghosts that inhabit jazz, classical, and pop songs. The album's musical spectrum, influenced by the "Hauntology" movement as well as Northern and Southern Gothic, ranges from Franz Schubert's "Erlkönig" to jazz standards by George Gershwin or Duke Ellington and pop songs by Nick Cave or Timber Timbre.
