Michael Nau’s solo career started with songs conceived and composed in private moments, which were later shared and re-imagined with auxiliary input on records such as Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread, Mowing, The Load EP, and Some Twist. These early drafts were kept in the vault as Michael moved on. Years later he found himself home, rediscovering old gems in his archives. That searching resulted in a new collection of Michael Nau’s earliest forays into solo work, collected here as Demo Versions, 2014 to 2017. In their first incarnations, these songs were less about a final outcome and more about discovery. These early drafts do more than just shed light on the creative process or expose the flexibility of his songwriting approach; they often place the content in an entirely new context. Ultimately, this album reveals a new side to these tracks, with Michael Nau’s lush arrangements and unorthodox accompaniment largely absent, and the simple beauty and grace at the forefront. Released in 2020.
