Distance is the Soul of Beauty is the new album by Anglo-Irish musician Michael J. Sheehy and his first in over a decade. These intimate and introspective songs were recorded at home late at night during the Covid-19 lockdown. They are sung in hushed tones while his wife and child slept. The lyrics are inspired by the writings of French philosopher Simone Weil, medieval English songs, the mystic Julian of Norwich, as well as Michael's personal struggle to maintain his sobriety in a world gone mad. These songs are personal while leaving plenty of space for the listener to project their own feelings and interpretations. Michael cites musical references such as the third self-titled album by the Velvet Underground, the tender moments of Suicide, and his unconditional love for Elvis Presley. This is undoubtedly his most accomplished and rewarding work to date.
