Broken Homes and Gardens, Michael Hurley’s final studio album, was completed in March 2025, shortly before his last concerts in Asheville and Knoxville. For three years, he patiently crafted these 11 tracks at The Rope Room studio in Astoria, Oregon, with the same team that worked on The Time of the Foxgloves (2021): Kati Claborn, Luke Ydstie (The Hackles), and engineer Brian Bovenizer. As is often the case with Hurley, this album blends reinterpretations of older songs—Indian Chiefs and Hula Girls, Abominable Snowman—and new compositions—Fava, The Monkey. Together, these songs form a luminous, touching, and unique collection, a true swan song from one of the most influential singer-songwriters in contemporary American music.
