The powerful Toronto trio returns with a noise album that steamrolls everything in its path
On September 22, METZ will release Strange Peace, their highly anticipated third album: a virulent, jarring effort that pushes the boundaries even further. It was at Electrical Audio studio in Chicago that Alex Edkins (guitar, vocals), Hayden Menzies (drums) and Chris Slorach (bass) recorded with Steve Albini, who was tasked with capturing all their energy on tape. The result is an artistic promise of great maturity, exploring new, more unsettling territory and frantically pushing the band to their limits; an album that has succeeded in capturing all the intensity of their live shows. The trio then continued assembling their album (including home recordings and additional instrumentation) at home in Toronto, adding the finishing touches with the help of their longtime collaborator, engineer and mixer Graham Walsh.
“The songs on Strange Peace speak about uncertainty,” Edkins explains. “It’s about recognizing that we are not always the sole masters of our destinies, admitting our mistakes and our fears. Through these songs, we try to find some semblance of peace amid this surrounding chaos.”
