The Norwegian saxophonist, composer, and improviser Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg makes her debut on ECM with this eponymous double album, which turns out to be an astonishingly original musical manifesto. Her ensembles bring together jazz and classical musicians, but their music shapes its own universe, outside the confines of genres. Mette Henriette juggles between form and freedom, allowing the intense sound of the tenor saxophone to traverse compositions of sometimes disarming fragility. Her music gives as much importance to vulnerability as to the power of full-breath playing, making the expressive and emotional palette of the recording wide. While the first disc features trio pieces with Mette Henriette, pianist Johan Lindval, and cellist Katrine Schiott, the second offers the listener the "sinfonietta" composed by Mette, which is accompanied by thirteen musicians. Some of them are well known to the ECM audience - trumpeter Eivind Lonning, drummer Per Oddvar Johansen, and members of the Cikada Quartet - and pool their creative energies to serve Mette's music.
