The dancing duo, costumed and rich in curiosities, formed by Freya Tate and Moina Moin, is as imaginative as it claims to be. Freya and Moina are two visual artists and musicians from Stroud and South London, places where they found communities of like-minded people, equally eager to pursue an idea to its eventually illogical conclusion. And it is within the collective that Mermaid Chunky makes perfect sense. It is a celebration, a collective dance, made all the better by the presence of more: people, ideas, layers, bass drums, recorders, saxophones, frogs. The first track of the album "Céilí," named after a Scottish or Irish dance and tradition, starts with a simple line of recorder and culminates in a warm explosion of dance music in major chords. "Frogsporn" and "Nature Girl" are gooey, trippy tracks filled with synths and squelch. "Tiny Gymnast" is a kaleidoscopic waltz that sinks into the night.
