With Furling, the fourth album by Meg Baird under her own name, she explores the breadth of her musical fascinations and the environments that surround them – the edges of memory, dreams that stretch over years, grief, and secret conversations under the stars. Furling traverses these varied spaces with the slippery, hazy cohesion of a dream, guided by a timeless and moving voice that remains singular and recognizable. It is the album that most irreverently explores the extent of her work and musical references. It highlights her natural connection to the English folk traditions of the 60s, but also reveals her deep love for soul ballads, Flying Saucer Attack, Neil Young's solitary reveries, the melancholic collages of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, and the delightful promise of a Saturday night from St. Etienne. Furling was recorded by Tim Green, with additional piano and vocal recordings by Jason Quever. The album was mastered in Brooklyn by Heba Kadry. Despite all its adornments, Furling remains deeply intimate. The album features Meg and her long-time collaborator, partner, and comrade Charlie Saufley from the band Heron Oblivion. While her earlier solo work hinted at broader horizons, Furling more freely explores the idea of Meg Baird as a band. Venturing beyond the confines of fingerstyle, she plays drums, mellotron, keyboards and synths, and vibraphone over her guitar and piano foundations. Her distinctive voice, both elegiac and inspiring, adds sunny tones to meditations on romantic solidarity in difficult times, weaving odes to the simple gestures of friendship.
