And then comes the night

Description

The Norwegian double bassist Mats Eilertsen has forcefully established his presence on ECM in recent years by participating, among others, in the recordings of Tord Gustavsen, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Nils Økland, Wolfert Brederode, and Jakob Young. And Then Comes The Night (a title borrowed from a novel by the Icelandic writer Jón Kalman Stefánsson) was recorded at the Audiotorio Stelio Molo in Lugano. Eilertsen, along with drummer Thomas Strønen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje, fully utilize what Mats calls 'the atmosphere and very particular personality' of the studio, highlighting qualities of interaction that the place naturally engenders. The result is this album of great collective subtlety, circumventing a large number of the conventions now associated with the art of the trio, for music that is as demanding as it is seductive, requiring great listening concentration to savor all its charms.
