My Boy, the third solo album from New Zealand singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, marks a renewal for the artist. Gone is the solemn crooner with a velvet voice; here, he makes way for a more mischievous, transformed character. After the release of his second album, Make Way For Love, in 2018, he toured the world, playing major festivals and collaborating with Lorde, Yo-Yo Ma, and Florence Welch. My Boy transforms this wave of experiences into a vibrant and dynamic record that is as spirited, complex, and cinematic as its performer’s journey. As the pandemic halted world travel, Marlon Williams found himself back home in New Zealand, reconnected with family and friends. Quickly, new demos and themes emerged: questions of self-identity and escape, tribalism and heritage; and considerations on the role of masculinity and camaraderie. Co-produced with Tom Healy and recorded at Roundhead Studios in New Zealand, My Boy allowed Marlon Williams to surround himself with a new band and experiment with distinct sounds alongside them. This sonic and emotional jolt is entirely intentional: with My Boy, Marlon Williams has fun while questioning his own behaviors and those of his peers. Pressed on green vinyl.
