Markus Floats, the avant-garde electronic composer/producer based in Montreal, follows up his acclaimed Third Album (2020) with Fourth Album, pushing his abstract electronic compositions into newly evocative territory (while maintaining his literalism). Sharing his recordings with a trio of collaborators from the powerful free music ensemble Egyptian Cotton Arkestra, each of these musicians then spent a day improvising on the tracks. The record features the violin of Ari Swan, the saxophone and mbira of James Goddard, and the guitar and drums of Lucas Huang. The result is a fluid, brilliant, and dynamic expansion of his sound and structure, which continues to find the ineffable balance between abstraction and soul. Fourth Album retains much of the enchanting balance of the previous work while inviting a bit more agitation, accident, and boldness, with the incorporation of acoustic instruments and improvisation that align more than ever with Markus's background in electroacoustic studies and jazz performance.
