The composer and saxophonist Marius Neset has always lived up to the great creative quality attributed to him, particularly with his trio of albums released on the ACT label since 2014. He has received numerous accolades commensurate with his work: notably a Grammy Award (for his album Lion) and a glowing review from the very famous journalist John Fordham (The Guardian), who considers him one of "the most talented young European jazz musicians in recent years." Originally, Circle Of Chimes was recorded in 2016 for the New Year's concert at the Cologne Philharmonic. The very characteristic sound of bells in the compositions will become the hallmark of the album, less to signify the New Year than to highlight the darker direction of this release. "This album is more personal than my previous ones. Many things have evolved in my life, which has allowed me to find new inspirations in my creative process. It's the most melancholic and dark work I've created." The same collaborators as on the album Pinball are present: pianist Ivo Neame (Phronesis project), French percussionist Jim Hart, drummer Anton Eger (Phronesis project), and double bassist Petter Eldh. The group is joined by a few other musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Terence Blanchard's guitarist, Lionel Loueke. By almost organically and transparently combining composition and jazz improvisation, Marius Neset offers us a new angle on contemporary music. It is certainly his most striking album to date!
