Droneflower

Description

Droneflower is the collaborative project of Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man), an album full of contrasts. It is the sound of a war between the brutal and the celestial, shadow and light, past and present, reality and imagination. Brodsky met Nadler in 2014 at a small bar in Brooklyn where he had come to see her perform, and an immediate connection was established between the two artists. Bound by a shared desire to explore different styles outside of their existing projects, ideas flowed and a collaboration began to take shape. The first song they composed together is titled Dead West, built around a beautiful guitar piece written by Brodsky. Nadler then added lyrics and a melody, and it became clear that this collaboration was destined for great things. All the tracks on Droneflower were recorded in a home studio at Nadler's place, and there is a palpable sense of intimacy when listening to the album. Songs like For the Sun were composed in one go, both lyrics and music. The lush ambient tracks Space Ghost I and Space Ghost II started as piano compositions written by Brodsky and were then fleshed out by Nadler. The two artists also recorded two covers for the album - the epic power ballad Estranged by Guns N' Roses and In Spite of Me by Morphine - accompanied by Morphine's saxophonist, Dana Colley.
