Sigismondo d’India has a "twin," a "mirror" in music: Claudio Monteverdi. Both developed, in parallel, a style that revolutionized the history of music. While this style is inherited from composers such as Luca Marenzio or Carlo Gesualdo, d’India and Monteverdi transformed it through the creation of new techniques, theorized by the latter in 1638 under the name of seconda pratica, which consist of breaking the rules of counterpoint to express heightened emotion. This is why I like to describe Sigismondo d’India's style as "mannerist," not in the sense of "affected" as it can sometimes be confused in French, but to emphasize how musicians like him and Claudio Monteverdi ensure the transition between the Renaissance and the Baroque. Just like the artists of disegno from that era, who exaggerate the gesture and form of the Renaissance figure, such as Michelangelo Buonarroti in his Sistine Chapel, Sigismondo d’India reminds us of a language, the result of a sophisticated reworking of a legacy.
