"Synergy" is a word often applied to musical groups of all kinds, but it rarely fits better than with the Norwegian trio Maria Kannegaard. From the opening jazz improvisation, "Dokking," the idea that three distinct and highly talented individuals can function as a single compact organism is clear; all the listener has to do is listen: the music takes you into its world, and it is warm and welcoming. Three-quarters of this recording consists of interpretations of tracks from the award-winning album "Sand I En Vik" - "Min Ingen," "Bortimot," and "Dere." A little more swing here, a hint of abstraction there; a bit of urgency and dynamism, or a new minimalism and meditative reflection; evolution, growth, change. Anyone familiar with Maria's work as a pianist, and the trio's work in particular, already knows that perfect balance is the order of the day.
