Marewrew (pronounced: Ma-leoo-leoo / m?le?u?le?u?) is a female vocal group that sings traditional Ainu songs. The music of this oppressed people from northern Japan has been at the center of Pingipung's production in recent years, with Oki Kano, who has recorded and produced many Ainu artists. After several reissues by Umeko Ando, the former grande dame of traditional Ainu music, the spotlight is now on Marewrew's a cappella music. "Ukouk" means "singing in a circle." Here, many songs are presented as closely interwoven canons: one starts, and the others join in, but slightly staggered: like double echoes, but sung and not created in post-production.
