Carrot on Strings, the new album by Man Man, the idiosyncratic band from Los Angeles, radiates a blend of calm and confidence. Ryan Kattner has always embodied the spirit of a fierce piper: his melodic and chaotic art-rock was both intriguing and unsettling. Its cinematic obsessions and Kattner's experience as a screenwriter have been pivotal for Carrot on Strings. The album nods to the films of Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, as well as to italo-disco, Randy Newman, gothic rock, and avant-pop. He recorded most of Carrot On Strings in five days in Los Angeles, with producer Matt Schuessler, who had worked on his cover of "Super" by Neu!.
