Mahne Frame (pronounced mah-nay frame) brings his pan-Pacific pop rave home with a divergent-sounding EP on Berlin's Monkeytown Records. The Australian musician and producer had spent the last four years developing his kitchen-sink electropunk aesthetic with his own entity 21 N FUN for ideas in Japan, where disaffection lyrics were dragged through grainy bedroom productions echoing his big beat and post-industrial influences. Tensioned by a repressed rage and isolation, these two EPs trace Frame's journeys, from a final concert as a touring drummer for avant-pop artist Kirin J Callinan in Tokyo to the border closures that left him stuck and restless in the East Asian megacity. Finally returning to his small hometown of Katoomba, nestled in the picturesque Blue Mountains, Frame's latest release loosens its grip on resentments and returns to the comfort of wide open spaces and geographical isolation. But far from following the globalized trends of the underground, Frame is simply a response to his environment: trading the noise and compact mobility of his scooter in a densely populated Japanese metropolis for the serene acoustic explorations of a guitar in the isolation of the Australian bush.
