The reputation of Madlib is well established. This DJ with multiple hats has made a name for himself through a series of remixes for the Beastie Boys, Bilal, Zero 7, or Jay Dee. Here he is in the cellars of the Blue Note label, with the freedom to do as he pleases. As a result, this visit to the history of jazz takes on a carefree session vibe. Madlib has fun with Ronnie Foster's Mystic River or Wayne Shorter's Footprints. Gently iconoclastic, the producer remains nonetheless settled in a not very revolutionary hip-hop/jazz niche. But this reinterpretation proves to be significantly more invigorating than the works of US 3.
