The collaboration between Mike Krol and Mac McCaughan began in 2015, when Mike and his bandmates Elliott Kozel, Phil Mahlstadt and Michael Sienkowski decamped to Tiny Telephone in San Francisco after recording Turkey, with the intention of turning a handful of riffs and ideas into a full record. After listening to the songs, Mike Krol realized that most of them were not in the right key for his voice. He therefore set them aside to deal with later, and eventually lost interest in them. In 2020, stuck indoors because of the pandemic, Mike rediscovered the tracks on an old hard drive and decided to take the time to try to work them out. He sent the tracks to Mac McCaughan, inviting him to write lyrics to sing over his instrumentals and thus give them a second life. Mac refused, then changed his mind. A few days later, three songs arrived with finished lyrics and the iconic Mac McCaughan singing on them.
