Places of varying familiarity with Lysistrata’s exhilarating noise rock, but often thrilled by its live mastery, let’s remember, quite above the rest. A frantic pace, then, but everything seems quite easy for these boys just over 20 years old. No calculation, no haste; with spontaneity, with passion. For the making of Breathe In/Out, the technical setup of the first album was naturally carried over, from Black Box studio for the setting to Michel Toledo for the recording (still live and to tape) and then the mix. But while the songs on The Thread had long lived on stage before finding their place on a record, here the path is the reverse: the album was entirely composed from October 2018 to March 2019, the date they entered the studio. The three accomplices bring their riffs, open up others together, resurrect unfinished ones, assemble them like Legos, build the structures that will gradually give rise to the new tracks. The lyrics, which evoke love as much as madness, anxiety and education, come together in a second stage and will often be chanted in unison. For Breathe In/Out, everything moves faster, Théo, Max and Ben know better what they want and execute it effortlessly. The tracks are also shorter on average, more direct. The ideas become more extreme, in one sense (brutal) as in the other. There is no place here for lukewarmness and we are thus thrown against the ropes (“Death By Embarrassment” and its tanker-like power, the slap in the face “Boot On a thistle”) before a real moment of calm halfway through on “End Of the Line,” a sublime ballad where the silences reveal the natural reverbs. Fans of more winding paths are obviously not forgotten (we are still in the house of Lysistrata), for example on “Different Creatures,” the champagne opening of the album; or on “Mourn,” the epic first single unveiled in summer 2019, accompanied by its animated video, just as adventurous, directed by illustrator Margaux Chetteau.
