Repotted two years ago on this side of the Rhine with her beautiful tribute album to Nina Simone, the German-Tanzanian Lyambiko makes her discographic - and stage - return with the splendid "Something Like Reality". Aside from three covers (the jazz standards "Work Song" & "Angel Eyes", a cover of Tracy Chapman's "Crossroads"), all the tracks on the album are originals written or co-written by the members of her long-time band. This tailor-made repertoire allows her to wonderfully express a beautiful richness of range: between jazz and funk, with dramatic or lighter tones, in a simple formation of vocals-piano-bass-drums or supported by a very sharp brass section, Lyambiko gives strength and depth to each of the 13 tracks that make up this beautiful album.
