Brownswood Remix Editions 008

Description

Brownswood Editions exhumes another treasure from its catalog by revisiting the Havana Cultura project. Initiated in the late 2000s by Gilles Peterson, DJ, host, and programmer, Havana Cultura connected contemporary Cuban musicians with an international audience at a time when the perception of Cuban music abroad remained largely rooted in the era of the Buena Vista Social Club. The project highlighted a new generation of Havana artists whose sound drew from the influences of the contemporary diaspora - neo-soul, hip-hop, and reggaeton - through a distinct Afro-Cuban prism. One of the most striking moments of the project was this Cuban reinterpretation of Fela Kuti's classic, "Roforofo Fight," a track that quickly became a staple for DJs thanks to its stage energy and catchy rhythm. The group features Mayra Caridad Valdés (daughter of Chucho), one of the most prominent Cuban jazz and soul singers, and internationally renowned pianist Roberto Fonseca. This new 12" edition pairs the original version with a highly sought-after remix by the legendary Louie Vega, who adds his unique New York Latin touch, extending the groove for contemporary dancefloors while respecting the Afro-Cuban roots of the track. The original pressing of the remix has since become highly prized on Discogs, making this long-awaited return to vinyl a must-have for DJs and collectors.
