Virtuoso of the violin who became one of the greatest conductors of his generation, Lorin Maazel passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the age of 84. An American by passport, he was born in Neuilly sur Seine (92) in March 1930. Throughout his career, he conducted more than 150 orchestras in nearly 5,000 operas and concert halls. He was the first American to have been both General and Artistic Director of the Vienna Opera and conducted the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. He also served as conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Paris was fortunate to see and hear him from 1977 to 1991, Musical Director of the Orchestre National de France, several recordings in this box set echo that. In a very vast repertoire, his discography counts in the hundreds of records, recorded on all the major labels.
