A Mold For The Bell

A Mold For The Bell is the new and second album by Logan Farmer, singer-songwriter and producer from Colorado. It is a collection of austere and ambient folk songs, linked solely by Farmer's unadorned voice, acoustic guitar, and the moving embellishments of collaborators, including saxophonist Joseph Shabason (who also mixed the album) and renowned harpist Mary Lattimore. With the help of Andrew Berlin, a Grammy-nominated producer (Gregory Alan Isakov), Farmer recorded all the vocal and guitar parts in two days and live in the studio, to capture the raw intimacy and immediacy of his live performances. The rest of the album's creation was done remotely with Shabason and a handful of other musicians, as wildfires, uprisings, and the pandemic raged around them. Every day on his way to work, Farmer passed by a church, where he often stopped to listen to the bells ring, a sound he always found comforting. However, as the situation worsened, those echoes began to feel unsettling, almost threatening. This experience, along with influences as disparate as Tarkovsky's film Andrei Roublev (1969) and the novels of Olga Tokarczuk, gave rise to a collection of songs that are equally unsettling, expanding the austere and spacious universe of Logan Farmer's previous album (Still No Mother, 2020) to reveal an even more oppressive and stagnant atmosphere, like an abandoned Victorian house.
