Soul Jazz Records presents Lloyd McNeill: Elegia

Description

Originally released on the artist’s own New York-based Baobab label, this is a fascinating collectors’ piece fusing spiritual jazz and Brazilian and Latin rhythms and melodies. The ground-breaking album is a musical highpoint in McNeill’s career as he is joined by the great percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, fellow Brazilians Portinho and Dom Salvador, as well as American jazz musicians including Cecil McBee on bass. In his 50-year career McNeill worked with many artists including Nina Simone, Eric Dolphy, Mulatu Asatke and Sabu Martinez. Lloyd McNeill grew up during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and his life and work reflect these ideals. This is the fifth Lloyd McNeill album that Soul Jazz Records have released; it follows the recent release of ‘Treasures’ (1976) and earlier albums ‘Asha’ (1969), ‘Tanner Suite’ (1969) and ‘Washington Suite’ (1970), all of which have been re-released to coincide with this new release. This album is fully re-mastered from the original tapes and is re-released for the first time ever on Soul Jazz Records in a very limited edition 1000 vinyl run (+ download code) and 1000 CDs.
