Less a tribute than an interpretation, less a re-reading than a resurrection, Deadjazz brings the music of the Grateful Dead, the legendary band of the psychedelic years, back to life. Drawing from a cult repertoire, carried by musicians who have forged unbreakable bonds around the Belmondo brothers for decades, this collective project is akin to an immersion into a crucial moment in music history: when jazz became electrified by the rhythms of rock, and rock freed itself from the constraints of song through improvisation. Developed with a dual-keyboard mirror setup, like the two guitars at the heart of the Grateful Dead's machine, this adventure vibrates with the distorted tones of Fender Rhodes and other Farfisa organs that defined the sound of the sixties, masterfully piloted by Laurent Fickelson and Eric Legnini. Unearthing the forms of the pieces, preserving their complexity beneath apparent simplicity, Lionel Belmondo conceived the repertoire as songs that open onto improvisation and welcome solos that tear through as much as they illuminate their framework.
