Akuphone is proud to present the Jerusalem-based improvisation trio "Leviot" and their hypnotic debut album. Leviot (meaning "Lioness" in Hebrew) is the brainchild of the multifaceted musician and composer Yael Lavie. She is joined by Cnaan Canetti, a classically trained percussionist and music teacher, and Yishay Seroussi, a synthesizer enthusiast. The project is the result of Yael Lavie's explorations beyond the constraints of the classical kanun and her fascination with electronic sounds and modern composition. The project began after Lavie played and recorded with the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center. With "Leviot", she prioritizes improvised sets over repeated tracks, revolving around the virtuoso interpretations of Cnaan and Yishay. The three musicians have been active since 2019, performing their immersive shows in a wide variety of settings, venues, and festivals. The trio's debut release is a live session recorded in late 2020 at Mazkeka Studios (Jerusalem), for the "confined" edition of the annual Zikuk festival. It is a meditative, five-part improvised piece that blurs the boundaries between traditional and experimental music, combining primitive and futuristic sounds. Lavie's graphic melodies provide a roadmap for the piece, as "Leviot" embarks on a cosmic journey with deep drones, whispering chimes, haunting Arabic melodies, pulsating rhythms, and iridescent "ambient" motifs.
