Joyful, powerful, aggressive, enraged. That's Les Rats on stage. Patrice (vocals) constantly reaching out to the audience, abusing his mic stand, passionately belting out his lyrics, to which he can now fully dedicate himself since he passed his guitar to Laurent, who also sings on the two-part harmony songs. Meanwhile, Jean-Michel acts like a madman behind his drums, joining in on the backing vocals between drum fills. The same goes for Momo (bass) and Serge (guitar), who, even if they don't have microphones (do they sing off-key?), seem not to care at all and act as if. In short, 'Les Rats' have an incredible energy, and the audience doesn't hesitate to let them know by moshing like crazy.
Les Rats have been loyal to 'Gougnaf' since their vinyl beginnings. That is, since their first 45 RPM single 'Violence' with its strange sound due to a lack of resources (recorded on eight tracks) and the band's inexperience.
Nevertheless, thanks to the quality of their compositions, they caught the ear of Christophe Sourice (the Thugs' producer) who came to lend them a hand for their first 33 RPM 'Tequila,' as did Géant Vert who provided them with three lyrics. And so, they have the same lyricist and the same producer, leading some malicious tongues to immediately say that Les Rats and Parabellum are one and the same. So let's clear up the discomfort: first, 'Les Rats' existed before Parabellum. Second, while there might have been a relative resemblance for 'Tequila' (due to the two previously mentioned individuals), with their new productions, the question can be considered null and void. Moreover, 'Les Rats' have never made the same mistake as Parabellum: becoming totally dependent on an external lyricist. They write the majority of their lyrics and do it very well. Direct, unembellished lyrics - though not without cynicism - that perfectly match their music and personalities.
With that kind of energy, they leave Dutronc in a wheelchair. What does the future hold for Les Rats (besides an upcoming album), I couldn't say. But in any case (and they claim it themselves), Les Rats are well on their way to not settling down. And when you know that they are one of the only living species on Earth that would survive an atomic war... you wonder what could possibly stop them!
