Heirs to Django, we knew it since the making of their first album “Y va tomber des cordes !”, sponsored by Tchavolo Schmitt, the most uncompromising of gypsy jazz guitarists. Disciples of Brassens? We suspected it, we hoped so. In the passionate and generous musical journey of Pommes, Uncle Georges appeared as the true missing link in the adventure. Patience was needed; inevitably, their turn would come. Before coming to celebrate their “neighbor the Ancestor,” they had explored the realms of popular song and French jazz. Those of Charles Trénet, Jean Sablon, Vian and Salvador, Charles Aznavour and so many others. They had traveled the roads of Swing, those of the Reinhardt/Grappelli duo as well as those of Count Basie, Cole Porter, Lester Young. In the end, the choice of repertoire for this album was dictated by Brassens himself: “I like Django very much. He is probably the only one I can listen to for hours on end without stopping. Besides, I like everything about him.” Thus Pommes de ma Douche have made musical connections suggested, consciously or not, by Georges Brassens himself.
