First album by the band Les Mercuriales released in 2022 on Hellzapoppin Records, Les choses m'échappent, immediately establishes itself as an explosion in the French rock landscape. Founded around the lyrics of novelist Jean-Pierre Montal (La Nuit du 5-7, Leur Chamade), the band revives a rare tradition: that of groups led by a writer, from Dashiel Hedayat with Gong to Michel Houellebecq with AS Dragon. In six hypnotic and furious tracks, the album oscillates between brutality and literature, drone and Latin jazz, country and New York rock, as if Lou Reed had wandered into a Jean-Pierre Melville film. Partly improvised, the music was recorded by Vincent Hivert (En Attendant Ana) and Alexis Fugain (Biche), two key figures of the French independent scene, and mastered by Mikey Youn aka Eddy Currect. Les Choses M’échappent, a lucid look at a world slipping through one's fingers, carried by writing reminiscent of short stories and a music that belongs only to itself.
