There is no longer any doubt, with the release of their third album, that Les Marquises is a truly remarkable project. At its helm is Jean-Sébastien Nouveau, a brilliant singer-songwriter who, as is his custom, has surrounded himself with numerous musicians to bring this new opus to life. And once again, the cast, though significantly revamped, is perfectly captivating.
We last left Les Marquises with the surprising *Pensée Magique*, released in 2013, an album oriented towards experimental pop inspired by the cinema of Werner Herzog, Peter Brook, and Jean Rouch. We now find Jean-Sébastien with *A Night Full Of Collapses*, which, as its title suggests, is an eminently nocturnal record. Cinematic atmospheres are still present, but the aforementioned references now give way to the work of David Lynch. And since we are talking about unsettling and offbeat atmospheres, it's impossible not to see the specters of Talk Talk and especially Psychic TV floating here and there.
But as always with Les Marquises, these are only first impressions. And while the influences and inspirations may seem clear at first glance, one quickly realizes that they are merely a backdrop, a simple background whose sole purpose is to set a scene, a context. Each listen proves different from the last, revealing new clues, suggesting new interpretations. From its title to its cover art, *A Night Full Of Collapses* cultivates a mysterious aura, conducive to wandering and reflection.
