Te deum

Description

Of all the performances of the Te Deum conducted during Lully's lifetime, history has only remembered the last one, which marked the composer's death in 1686: it was while beating time, carried away by zeal, that he accidentally pierced his foot with the tip of his cane... But it was ten years earlier, for the baptism of his own son in the presence of Louis XIV, the child's godfather, that Lully composed this significant score that established an "official" genre for a century. Also intended to celebrate military victories or major events of the reign, the grand motet Exaudiat Te Dominus is a resounding glorification of the King, whose arms God comes to support. Stéphane Fuget, with his ensemble Les Épopées, thus completes this integral dedicated to Lully's Grand Motets, adding for this lavish program the Pages and the Chantres of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles: To the Glory of God and the King!
