Album No 1 (Id Ed Was)

Description

Wewantsounds is thrilled to continue its Algerian music reissue program with the release of The Abranis' highly sought-after 1983 LP, *Album No. 1*. Originally recorded in Paris and released as a private press by the band, the album is reissued here for the first time. Selected by Cheb Gero, *Album No. 1* is a clever blend of Kabyle grooves, funk with touches of reggae. Founded in France in the late 60s by two young Kabyle workers, Shamy El Vaz and Karim Abdenour, Les Abranis established themselves in the 1970s thanks to their innovative sound, mixing traditional Kabyle music, funk, rock, and psychedelic influences. In 1983, the band entered Studio Acousti in Paris to record *Album No. 1*. They were accompanied by legendary French drummer André "Dédé" Ceccarelli – who played with Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall as well as Janko Nilovic, Teddy Lasry, and Jacky Giordano – and Tony Bonfils on bass. Together, they developed an relentless groove. *Album No. 1* unveils a remarkable sound palette, from the cult track "Avehri" with its reggae touch to the captivating funk of "Achethkhi", and the instrumental "Thadoukli". Known as Id Ed Was, the album is reissued with original artwork, remastered audio, and a two-page booklet with new liner notes by journalist Rabah Mezouane.
