Vinyl Reissue: Those who had held onto the (false) image of a folk singer-songwriter performing at campfires swallowed their scout badges when this album was released. This is far from the instrumental minimalism dear to the Cohen of the sixties and early seventies (his heyday). Here, everything is synthetic sounds and mechanical rhythms, contemporary soundscapes upon which the Canadian poet's still incredible voice is laid, accompanied by his usual backing vocalists (including the faithful Jennifer Warnes), for eight extraordinary songs: from "First We Take Manhattan" to the exceptional "Tower Of Song," passing through "Everybody Knows" or "I'm Your Man," nothing but classics, which naturally take their place alongside their famous predecessors, "Suzanne" and others. Genius transcends eras.
