Leon Keita

An emblematic figure of the Malian music scene, Léon Keïta was born in Conakry, on the Atlantic coast of Guinea, in 1947. After his studies, he settled in the Malian capital where, in addition to founding the Piano Jazz Orchestra, he worked as a teacher and organizer of cultural festivals. In 1970, he participated, with his friend Manfila Keita, in the creation of the legendary Rail-Band, which became a famous pillar of nightlife in Bamako and launched the international careers of Salif Keita, Mory Kanté, and many others. Leon joined Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, with whom he toured throughout West Africa. In 1978, he released two records with Les Ambassadeurs as the backing band on the Papa Disco label. A year later, Leon released Rythmes et Mélodies du Mali, supported by the magnificent Orchestre Black Santiago, featuring the catchy trumpet of Ignace de Souza, the band leader. Although Leon did not make many solo recordings, his songs continue to inspire reverence in all those who have had the chance to hear them. This new compilation offers a dive into Manding culture with five rare tracks recorded during his sessions in the late 70s, featuring hypnotic guitar solos, heavy bass riffs, psychedelic organs, and funky brass.
