Close to the rebellious and anarchist poets himself, Léo Ferré skillfully wielded the "green language" (raw language, akin to slang). He had to set to music poems by Aragon, a former agitator within the surrealist movement, a successful novelist, and certainly the greatest writer who was a member of the communist party. For, even though it is known that Communists and Anarchists hardly get along, the two men are open, and they share a taste for words that far exceeds ideological divides. It was by reading Le Roman inachevé, published in 1956, that Léo Ferré began to work on a set of songs drawn from Aragon's poems. Among all the poems set to music by Léo Ferré, the songs of Aragon are the most striking. Just listen again to "Est-ce ainsi que les hommes vivent" to verify this.
