To love each other is to believe that we will always end up finding each other again. Even in the midst of chaos, even when everything seems to be drifting away. It is moving forward, without really knowing where it leads us, but with that strange certainty that as long as we stay together, it will hold up.
L.E.J, that is it. A friendship that began long before the music, before the spotlights, before the tours. Lucie, Elisa and Juliette, born a few months apart, raised on the same street in Saint-Denis, lulled by the same melodies. One at the Conservatoire, the other two at the Maîtrise de Radio France, all three driven by that same urgency to sing, to play and to create.
In 2013, almost by chance, they entered a competition. They won. A few cover videos followed, and in 2014 came the idea of the “summer medley”. In 2015, they posted a first mashup, just for fun. It blew up, and everything changed. To love each other was to learn how to weather the storm. Success that suddenly appears, the light that is too bright, the labels people stick on you before you have even had time to know who you are. It was fighting to keep control, to exist beyond a mere buzz. So, they created. En attendant l’album (2015), confirms their originality and their first tour of more than 100 dates is rewarded with a Victoire de la Musique (Révélation scène) in 2017. Poupées Russes (2018), reveals their first original songs and Pas Peur (2020), further asserts their identity. And then a final album of covers of French songs, Volume II (2022), before taking the plunge.
Their new album, S’aimer c’est une galère, marks a new stage. More personal, more raw. An album entirely self-produced, shaped by six hands, without compromise. With Christopher Colesse aka C.Cole (Waxx’s sidekick in Fanzine) in charge of production, they found the perfect balance: a hybrid sound, between r’n’b, French chanson and French touch, where spellbinding harmonies rub shoulders with decidedly modern sounds. And who better than close friends to perfect the whole thing? With Chilla and Nemir, they put the finishing touch on an album that could not suit them better.
To love each other is to understand that growing up does not mean losing yourself. That even if each has their own chaos, their own way of seeing the world, in the end, it is the trio that carries you. And that before loving others, you must also learn to love yourself. Accept your contradictions, your flaws, your moments of doubt and greatness. Because loving yourself is perhaps even more of a struggle.
To love each other is to accept that nothing is simple. That love and friendship are sometimes a battlefield, a fragile balancing act, a mix of sorrows and laughter that rings louder than everything else. That is what L.E.J sing today. Love without filters. Imperfect friendship. The struggles of everyday life. And this permanent fight to accept ourselves, as we are.
To love each other is to bare ourselves despite the risk that tomorrow everything may stop. It is taking the gamble on an unvarnished record. A vulnerable breath. To love each other is to dare to confess.
