Josef Myslivecek, known as Il Divino Boemo (the Divine Bohemian), was one of the most performed composers in Italy during the 1770s. His instrumental works (symphonies, concertos, octets, quartets, and trios) were as popular as his vocal music. Some of his melodies reflect his Bohemian origins, and Myslivecek's influence on his contemporaries was considerable. A close friend and source of inspiration for Mozart, the latter described Myslivecek as "full of fire, spirit, and life." His six surviving violin concertos were likely written in a very short period at the end of the 1760s and the beginning of the 1770s while the composer maintained close ties with the city of Padua and Giuseppe Tartini. Faithful to the Italian tradition, all of his violin concertos follow the three-movement model of "fast-slow-fast."
