Lee "Scratch" Perry returns with 9 new tracks, recorded with his friend and long-time collaborator Adrian Sherwood (founder of On-U Sound) at the helm. "This is the most intimate album ever created by Lee, but at the same time the musical ideas are very fresh. I am very proud of the work we have done with this record." Rainford is the result of more than two years of work, with recording sessions in Jamaica, Brazil, and the UK to create a powerful album. Sherwood compares the record to what Rick Rubin did with Johnny Cash for the American Recordings series: a particularly personal album (the title refers to Lee's birth name), and undoubtedly Perry's most significant work in several years. Rainford begins with the atmospheric field recording and wah-wah guitar of Cricket on the Moon, continues its momentum with the majestic cellos that adorn Let It Rain, the compressed brass section of Makumba Rock, and the divine choruses that punctuate the album are a masterful testament to all the attention and love with which it was composed. The record concludes with Autobioagraphy of the Upsetter, in which Perry tells the story of his life, from his childhood on a plantation in colonial Jamaica in the 1930s to his success as a globally recognized artist.
