The trumpeter Lee Morgan (1938-1972) will always be associated with his hit "The Sidewinder." As a wonderful musician, he had already made a remarkable debut in Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band at the age of 18, and the Blue Note label had immediately signed him. Remarkably, he had his first session with Hank Mobley at the Savoy and one day later with Rudy van Gelder. From the sometimes rather routine recording sessions with a typical quintet formation in this crucial and difficult era of hard bop, Morgan's albums stood out from the beginning, not only because of his phenomenal technique, which he always put at the service of the music, but also in the selection of his musicians and instruments.
