On “Models”, Lee Gamble unleashes sonic specters to inform a suite of illusory anthems, sublimating vulnerable and half-forgotten fragments of dream pop, Soundcloud rap and trance in the process. Sung by cybernetic voices in an almost wordless language, his widescreen recollections echo through the past several decades of pop history, transforming the surreal poetry of Elizabeth Fraser into disembodied diva wails and the abstract, AutoTuned mumblings of Lil Uzi Vert. By extracting haunted fragments of corrupted synthetic chatter and indecipherable non-words to sculpt dreamy pop simulacra, Gamble pushes the concept of the pop producer to its logical extreme; examining how intonation and language are engineered to monopolize our attention, his magical inversion of pop playing out like a mesmerising symphony of earworms.
