LE TON MITÉ is a musical collective built around an eminently original artist: the eccentric and endearing musician/plastician/luthier on the move McCloud Zicmuse, an American expatriate permanently based in Brussels (where he had formed the band Hoquets). McCloud has recently turned his attention to his native country, the USA, which he traveled across again after a decade of absence, with affection, perplexity, and concern. This journey inspired him to create a dazzling new album, whose fifty tracks, lovingly crafted pop haikus, draw on more than half a dozen musical styles (rock, folk, soul, square dance, baroque, free jazz, and various experimental musics) to poetically describe the whimsical tribulations of their author. Fifty tracks, like the number of states in the USA, in which rhythm sections, saxophones, guitars, keyboards, bassoons, flutes, Vosges epinette, and percussion coexist. The orchestrations are at once extravagant and elegant, sometimes rich, sometimes stripped down, and the whole thing is of course put through the Le Ton Mité mill: McCloud Zicmuse’s inimitable touch, his fantasy, his poetic approach to music and to life in general, are all there. Most of the lyrics are in French, but he also sings in English, Dutch, and Spanish. The album was recorded near Cherbourg and mixed in Brussels with the help of Marc Meliá (Lonely Drifter Karen), Rutger De Brabander and Hans Bloemmen, with the valuable contribution of John Dieterich (Deerhoof) on five tracks, as well as Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw). It is released as part of Crammed’s legendary MADE TO MEASURE series.
