Recorded in ten days by Michel Toledo (The Psychotic Monks, Lysistrata, etc.) at Studio Véga in Carpentras, on one of the legendary analog EMI consoles, this second opus plunges us into the heart of LANE. With its 13 tracks (2 LPs in vinyl version), 'Pictures of a Century' is an even more realistic collection of vignettes of the current century. Deep like a dense forest electrified by a power of emotions: magnificent disillusionments, intact hopes, accelerations, rising landscapes, fading times, love... LANE reminds us of this with its acronym: Love And Noise Experiment! It would be best not to mention The Thugs in this review, or only later and incidentally, in order to provide some objective biographical reference – in this case, that two of the Sourice brothers, founders of The Thugs, are part of the Lane crew. But here's the thing: from the first fiery notes of this record, the heart leaps, the body stiffens, and the hand mechanically reaches for the volume button to turn it up. We cannot forget The Thugs nor treat them as a distant reference. Their music is still, long after their disappearance in 1999, incredibly vibrant. And it's an immense pleasure to rediscover these stormy guitars and electric rides, which continue to draw a fraternity with Hüsker Dü or Dead Kennedys. The hypnotic legacy of The Thugs is joined by another vein, more (power) pop and sometimes contemplative, equally successful, which makes this second Lane album, 'Pictures of a Century', a very fine achievement. --- Pierre Lemarchand ---.
