Nicknamed by MARTIN SCORCESE “the ROLLING STONES of Africa,” the five members of NASS EL GHIWANE began their career as actors under the direction of filmmaker TAYEB SEDDIKI. Their songs became anthems of Moroccan youth in the 70s, reflecting an aspiration for social emancipation forged in the crucible of the ancestral traditions of the Maghreb (gnawa, Berber music), the poems of the great Sufi mystics, and a modernization of chaâbi. Originally released on the Cléopâtre label, their self-titled 1976 album, remastered and reissued as it was at the time in an elegant 33 rpm edition, is considered by fans to be their best.
