Giovanni Bononcini composed the oratorio La Conversione di Maddalena in 1701. The musician from Modena, who was very famous at the time, had access to the best ensembles of his era: four singers and an instrumental group, limited to strings but capable of articulating the tutti-concertino and solo passages for violin, cello, and viola da gamba in concert. The very popular story of Mary Magdalene, a fascinating subject of Baroque spirituality during the Counter-Reformation, is treated with originality by the anonymous author of the libretto, who reflects the difficult path of conversion of the sinful saint.
