Vivo

Description

Fonded by three young Colombian students who immigrated to Brussels, Chiva Gantiva has patiently forged its style. They start by drawing from the rich musical traditions of their home country (notably cumbia and Afro-Colombian music), and blend them with afrobeat, funk, and rock. Joined by four other musicians (one French, one Vietnamese, and two Belgians), the group transforms into an explosive stage machine. This new album was mixed in New York by Joel Hamilton (Blakroc, Sparklehorse, Marc Ribot, Bomba Estereo). The sound of "Vivo" reflects the incredible energy of the band in concert, its "frenetic punk carnival racket that detonates like a Molotov cocktail of rock, rap, soul, and fiercely funky Latin rhythms" (according to The Times of London). The members of Chiva Gantiva also explore new musical directions, creating two or three extremely modern tracks on these more "roots" foundations. They have also approached unprecedented sound textures, while remaining firmly based on their trademark: relentless rock and afrobeat rhythms, punctuated by exuberant brass riffs.
