Ky is the new project of Ky Brooks, better known as the singer and songwriter of the noise trio Lungbutter and a host of other Montreal musical projects such as the queer punk group Femmaggots and the experimental trio Nag. Power Is The Pharmacy is an art punk album that is cerebral and visceral, primarily dealing with grief, death, the fear of mourning, the loss of dreams, youth, people, and ultimately, oneself. It is a collection of electrifying songs fueled by Ky's striking poetry, spoken and sung, offering a incisive blend of sociopolitical observation and spiritual sadness, swirling between disenchantment and reenchantment. Power Is The Pharmacy features whistling noise synths, touches of free/jazz, a soft and focused soundscape, coldwave, and ambient up to thick sludge, all anchored by Ky's lyrics and voice, superbly sneaky, sought-after, and sharp. The album ranges from incisive spoken pieces to haunting electro. The second half of the album showcases Ball's incendiary noise guitar, as well as Ky's voice, which breaks free with more ferocity and soul. Ky enlisted a team of Montreal companions to enrich this captivating journey through the mood swings and styles of experimental song, including the aforementioned Mat Ball, synth master Nick Schofield, saxophonist James Goddard (Egyptian Cotton Arkestra), bassist Joshua Frank (Gong Gong Gong), and drummer Farley Miller (Shining Wizard). She composed all the music, played synths and guitars, and mixed the album.
